Joseph To

Joseph To, originally from Hong Kong, is a distinguished conductor, music educator, and advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion in the arts. Based in Seattle, he directs the Norwegian Ladies Chorus of Seattle, the Magnolia Chorale, and a religious choir, while inspiring young musicians at Washington Middle School in Seattle Public Schools.

An award-winning leader, Joseph received the 2022 Outstanding Emerging Choral Director Award from WAACDA and serves on its Board of Directors as the World Music's and Culture Repertoire and Resources Chair. His versatile career spans choral and orchestral music, with a focus on culturally rich programming and innovative practices.

A sought-after speaker, Joseph has presented at major conferences on ethnomusicology, culturally responsive teaching, and ADEI (Accessibility, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion). In 2024, he was a featured panelist at the Chorus America Annual Conference, addressing the future of choral leadership and supporting leaders of color.

As a trailblazer in ADEI initiatives, Joseph founded the first ADEI committee for the Magnolia Chorale and continues to foster equity and inclusion in all his endeavors. His work bridges cultural divides, celebrates diverse traditions, and inspires excellence in students, colleagues, and communities.
